Abstract
The development of "new ornamental plants" in Europe is described and evaluated.
After introduction with basic economic data and information on per-person-expenditures for ornamental plants in 14 European countries with highest gross national product the history of plant collecting is presented and explained by means of examples.
This is followed by definitions and explanations on subject of "old/new ornamental plants", "new ornamental plant products" and "genuine new ornamental plants". Details on search and development especially of "new ornamental plants" in past and at present are given for 14 European countries.
Finally an evaluation and a summary of the information on the different countries is presented.
