Abstract
A brief overview of the Ornamental Horticultural Industry in South Africa is given.
Institutions and companies involved in research, development and marketing of new ornamental crops are discussed.

A number of new selections and cultivars are considered in respect of their taxonomy, phenotype, propagation, climatic conditions, horticultural potential, origin and availability.

Indigenous plants with a potential as future horticultural crops are mentioned.

Prospects of trade and exchange of material, scientific expertise and manpower are proposed.
