Abstract
xDoriella Tiny is an allied genus of Phalaenopsis which normally requires at least 3 years to flower from seed in a greenhouse.
We developed a method in which flowering occurred within 10 to 12 months in vitro or in vivo in plantlets developed from protocorm-like bodies of xDoriella Tiny.
This is the first report of precocious flowering in xDoriella Tiny.
The method consists of two parts: a rapid cycle of vegetative propagation and an effective induction of flowering.
The procedure of inducing in vitro flowering consists of two steps: the initiation of floral buds and development of floral stalks in a Vacin Went medium with BA, and the promotion of flowering in a BA-free Hyponex medium. In vivo induction of flowering was conducted as follows: First, the vegetatively propagated explants were transplanted into a BA-free Hyponex medium for root formation.
Then, the plantlets were transplanted into pots in a greenhouse, and treated with BA until the emergence of floral buds.
With these methods, the induced precocious flowers both in vitro and in vivo exhibited normal color and appearance.
We also obtained fertile seeds by crossing the precocious flowers with Doritis pulcherrima.
