Abstract
Cross sections of leaves derived from kiwifruit plants grown in vitro under normal illumination (NL) disclosed an atypical palisade parenchyma resembling the spongy one.
Under normal illumination and in the presence of sucrose, numerous and large starch grains were deposited in the chloroplast stroma, whereas under intense illumination (IL), starch grain formation was somehow limited.
Raising of Mg concentration 3 times the normal value resulted in a significant increase of the leaf blade thickness and of the density of the chloroplast stroma as well.
However, starch grain formation was not favored.
The photosynthetic capacity (Pn) of leaves greatly increased when Mg concentration was enhanced and sucrose was excluded from the nutrient substrate.
Total sugar accumulation in all treatments was favored by normal light intensity and addition of sucrose.
