Abstract
The effects of root temperature and oxygen supply to the roots on growth of five species of Actinidia (A. deliciosa, A. chinensis, A. eriantha, A. rufa and A. hemsleyana) were examined under controlled conditions.

Maximum growth rates, and the biggest plant dry matter concentrations for all species grown in solution culture were measured at root temperatures of about 22°C. While most species tested did not appear to be well adapted to low concentrations of oxygen in the root zone, some were less sensitive.
A tentative ranking system for the measured differences between species, based on ability to recover from the effects of root anoxia, is proposed.
