EFFECT OF DRY MATTER CONTENT OF THE KIWIFRUIT AT HARVEST ON STORAGE PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY

Abstract
During a nutritional survey of "Hayward" kiwifruit plantations in N. Greece (1989–94), in addition, it was studied the effect of fruit quality parameters, such as, flesh firmness, dry matter content, soluble solids and acidity, of the kiwifruit at harvest on storage performance.
It was found that the dry matter content of the fruit at harvest affected significantly the soluble solid content of the fruit after a storage period.
Fruits with the highest DM content (18–19%)had the highest level of SSC (16%), though fruits with the lowest DMC (14–15%) had the lowest SSC (14%). The level of 6.5% SS at harvest was the minimum level required in order fruits with the lowest % of DMC to reach the 14% level of SS after a storage period.
