Abstract
Gas exchange rates were studied in leaves of Vitis vinifera L. (cv.
Roditis) in order to evaluate the influence of leaf age on Water Use Efficiency (W.U.E.). Maximum photosynthetic rates occured when leaves became fully expanded approximately 35 days after unfolding and thereafter declined gradually.
The reduction in photosynthetic rate in relation to leaf age can be mainly attributed to the increase in mesophyll resistance.
The changes of transpiration rate in relation to leaf age followed the same pattern with changes of the photosynthetic rate.
W.U.E. was higher in fully expanded leaves and remained relatively high in old leaves.
