Abstract
An aeroponic system basically is an air water culture technique in which the plant roots are suspended in air and sprayed with nutrient solution.
Development of an aeroponic system for fruit trees to provide access to clean intact roots for direct observation, measurement and other experimental purposes such as application of precise levels of exogenous hormones and water stress study is important.
No research using this system has been reported in fruit trees in the last decade, although a few papers discussing the use of hydroponic systems with apple, peach and lemon have appeared.
The aeroponic system was developed and used as an irrigation tool to apply a precise level of water stress under controlled environment conditions.
Uniform two years old apricot cv.
Trevatt with plum rootstock were transferred before bud burst to the aeroponic tanks.
Water stress was applied gradually after acclimation using an intermittent misting system.
The level of water stress was controlled and checked frequently throughout the experiment using leaf water potential and related vegetative growth data.
This system allowed good control of water stress on the apricot plants throughout the experiment.
