INFLUENCE OF DENSITY AND IRRIGATION IN THE PRODUCTION OF TWO LEGUME SPECIES UNDER MIXED CONDITIONS

Abstract
In order to examine the response of two annual legume species (Trifolium purpureum (L.) and Trifolium angustifolium at two different watering regimes as well as the type of interference involved, a replacement series experiment was conducted in pots placed in the field under controlled watering.
The predawn and midday ø and the dw/plant were measured also the Relative Yield Total (RYT) was calculated.
In all cases the RYT was higher than 1, suggesting that either the two species have different demands of available water supply, and so avoid competition, or they seem to have a kind of symbiotic relationship (at least with respect to combined yield). The results show that the intraspecific competition controlls the competitive outcome in Tr. purpureum. On the contrary in Tr. angustifolium it is the interspecific one.
The predawn differs from the midday water potential for both species independently of the total density and the time period of growing season.
Furthermore, species density seems to affect the seasonal changes of predawn and midday
mainly after the first measurement.
