Abstract
Two cultivars (‘Negroamaro’ and ‘Verdeca’) and three rootstocks (140 Ru, 420 A and Kober 5BB) characterized by different vigour and resistance to arid soil were investigated to test their response in terms of water use efficiency, quantum yield and water potentials, under irrigated and nonirrigated growing conditions in Southern Italy.
As mainly indicated by stem water potential, the irrigated vines showed a better water status; in the nonirrigated vines, the relative drought inhibition in leaf gas exchanges were not very marked.
Irrigation resulted in levelling quantum yield, water use efficiency and stem water potential as affected by cultivar and rootstock influence.
Drought conditions pointed out the negative performance of genotypes such as cv.
Negroamaro and Kober 5BB, both characterized by high vegetative vigour in comparison to ‘Verdeca’ and 140 Ru, respectively.
Quantum yield and stem water potential appeared more sensitive in pointing out physiological differences than water use efficiency and leaf water potential.
Irrigation improved the photosynthetic efficiency in Negroamaro/Kober 5BB, Negroamaro/420 A and Verdeca/Kober 5BB and the water use efficiency only in Verdeca/Kober 5BB: this response was due to a low performance of the nonirrigated vines rather than to a high performance of the irrigated ones. ‘Negroamaro’ and ‘Verdeca’ on 140 Ru and ‘Negroamaro’ on 420 A resulted in the highest psistem within the nonirrigated vines.
These latter graft combinations had not quantum yield and water use efficiency improved by irrigation but they reached quite performing results either with or without watering, thus they could be considered as the most suitable for winegrape cultivation under arid growing conditions.
