Abstract
Since the end of 1991 we have studied 21 different plant genera, mainly trees and shrubs coming from nurseries and gardens.
Samples were collected from plants showing symptoms of “damping off”, damage to the roots or collar (stunting, chlorosis,…). The samples taken were processed in the laboratory, and where detected, pathogenic fungi isolated, cultivated and classified.
The genus most isolated was Pythium. Here we describe the morphological characteristics that distinguish the most common species, Pythium irregulare Buisman, Pythium paroecandrum Dreschler y Pythium intermedium de Bary.
