Abstract
The detection and evaluation of decay in trees is very important to perceive hazardous trees.
VTA (Visual Tree Assessment) is a visual tree inspection method with verified failure criteria.
VTA is guided by the principles of biomechanics and based on the Axiom of uniform stress.
After a visual inspection for diagnostic symptoms those defects, which turned out to be critical will be examined with special measuring tools.
The Fractometer and the Resistograph-M are decay detecting tools which have been recently developed by Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in co-operation with IML-Instrumenta Mechanik Labor GmbH to identify and evaluate hazardous conditions in trees.
Examples for the detection of different kind of decay are presented for each of the tools.
