Abstract
Morphological and physiological character, and germination in achenes of Rosa persica, and other species of roses were also examined.
Achenes of R. persica easily germinated irrespective of cold stratification.
ABA content in the achenes of R. persica was very low, and it was presumed that such low ABA content influenced its easy germination.
The imbibition of achenes in R. persica was much greater than that in R. multiflora var. adenochaeta. The pericarp of achenes increased in thickness until about 20 days after anthesis.
The outer epidermis of the pericarp (exocarp) in a achene of R. persica was extremely thicker than that of R. multiflora var. adenochaeta.
The cells of exocarp of R. persica were radially elongated after fertilization, while those of other species were not elongated.
The relationship between the structure of pericarp and germination is discussed.
