Abstract
The production of Asian pears in China has developed very quickly since the 1980s.
Now, China produces more Asian pears than any other countries in the world, with an annual output of about 8 million tons and 0.94 million hectares under Asian pear cultivation.
This ranks the fruit third in importance, after apple and orange in China.
The dominant cultivars are mainly developed from Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd., P. ussuriensis Maxim. and P. serotina Rehd., but many new cultivars of P. serotina have been introduced from Japan recently.
The research associated with germplasm resources of pear has been greatly advanced.
Some red-skinned cultivars are selected, and some cultivars that are resistant to pear scab are being tested in many Provinces.
Facing the challenges of the 21st century in the increasing demand for high quality fruits, key problems and research programs for production of Asian pears in China are discussed in this article.
