Abstract
The objective of this work was to determine the levels, the mobilization and the translocation of sugars during pear tree bud development.
The experiment was carried out on productive pear trees, Housui and Nijisseiki, at two locations: São Joaquim-SC and Pelotas-RS, Brazil.
Three uniform plants were selected. At each location, ten buds were collected on branches, at different times preceding flowering, in August and September of 2000. The analyses were accomplished in the Physiology Laboratory of Embrapa Temperate Climate Research Center, in Pelotas-RS. The fructose, alpha-glucose, sorbitol, beta-glucose, sucrose and total sugar levels were analyzed separately in the buds and in the branches.
The concentration of sugars was obtained through gas chromatography.
An increase was observed in the levels of total sugars in the buds and a decrease in the branches in São Joaquim as the collection time neared flowering.
This indicates that the bud is a strong sink for sugars at this time of development of the pear tree, at this location.
The pattern of sugar accumulation in buds in São Joaquim was not observed with clarity in Pelotas indicating the occurrence of alterations in the consumption of these reserves.
Possibly, this factor of reserve consumption that happens at Pelotas can be due to climatic factors, may be thermal fluctuations responsible for the high degree of floral abortion in the Nijisseiki cv.
