Abstract
Wakahikari and Natsuhikari, new Japanese pear cultivars, have been selectively bred since 1976 and 1977, respectively according to the breeding program in Chiba prefecture.
Wakahikari was selected from among those seedlings which were obtained by a cross between Shinsui and Housui. Wakahikari is medium in tree vigor.
Harvesting time is early to mid-August in Chiba City, central Japan.
It is a red pear that is excellent in appearance and large as early maturing cultivars.
The flesh is soft.
Natsuhikari was selected from among those seedlings which have been obtained by a cross between Shinsui and Chousui. Expansion of tree crown is rather sow.
Its harvesting time is mid-August to early September.
It is a red pear which is excellent in appearance and quality, matures between Kousui and Housui. Juice has a high Brix value, and tastes very sweet.
