FORCING CULTURE OF THE JAPANESE PEAR ‘NIITAKA’, WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF HARVESTING FRUITS IN EARLY AUGUST

Abstract
The objective of the work described in this paper was to use forcing culture of Japanese Pear (Pyrus serotina Rehder var. culta Rehder) Niitaka to achieve harvest in early August.
A heating treatment from January 19th to April 27th advanced both blooming and harvest times by about 70 and 80 days, respectively, compared with those trees grown in open culture.
The initial, maximum and last harvest dates were August 3rd, 9th and 16th, respectively.
The average fruit weight was 997 g and the Brix value was 12.8%, which are almost the same values as those achieved in open culture.
Some noticeable characteristics of forced fruits were slightly elongated shape, less cracking at the stylar end, and slightly increased firmness (4.8 lb.). The forcing culture method of Niitaka shown here yields good quality fruits and can produce fruits in early August when the demand from markets as gift items is at its maximum.
