Abstract
The bacteriosis caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae is a great problem for peaches and nectarines in Romania.
Chemical control is expensive and quite often ineffective so the best solution to fight against this disease is to use resistant cultivars.
Knowledge of peach and nectarine varieties and hybrids behavior towards bacterial attack is essential for developing resistance.
Some peach cultivars have already been reported in the literature as resistant to bacteriosis such as Blake, Camden, Elegant Lady, Encore, Gemfree, Summerglo and Suncrest.
Other authors reported that some peach and nectarine cultivars showed certain bacteriosis resistance such as Dixired, Harbinger, Harrow Blood, Jerseyglo, Redglobe, Rutgers Red Leaf, Hardyred, Harko and Nectared 7.
We found that cultivars like Peking, GF667, Ellerbe and Encore had bacteriosis resistance for more than 5 years even under the hard winter conditions of southern Romania.
Our studies demonstrated that other cultivars such as Triestina, Harvester, Corell, Afterglo, Jing You and Early Jersey Queen were very susceptible.
All varieties and hybrids were inoculated with Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (PSS) bacterial suspension in mixture.
Three strains of Pseudomonas were used: T1594 strain that produce syringomicine, T1428 nucleate ice, as well as T1428 strain that produce syringomicine and nucleate ice, moderately, too.
