THE INFLUENCE OF SCION-ROOTSTOCK COMPATIBILITY ON PEAR PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERITICS

Three series of experiments with 19 scion-rootstock combinations were carried out.
Tested pear cultivars were the following: ‘Yablunivs’ka’, ‘Parisianka’ (15-year-old trees), ‘Bosc’ (15-year-old and two-year-old trees), ‘Vyzhnytsia’, ‘Malevchanka’, ‘Zolotovorits’ka’ (annual, two-year-old, and 3-year-old trees). Pear seedlings, Quince MA (alone or with ‘Cure’ interstock), Quince BA-29, rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L.), and June-berry (Amelanchier ovalis Med.) were used as rootstocks.
Biometrical characteristics, leaf pigment content, distributions of carbohydrates among various organs and tissues, and impedance values were determined.
The obtained results may be considered as a convincing argument that data on carbohydrate contents (sugars and starch) in leaves and shoots of pear scions together with impedance measurements near grafting sites (above and below) give quite sufficient information to estimate the level of the scion-rootstock compatibility for 1-3-year-old trees, so avoiding the need for long-term observations.
