Abstract
With the objective of examining the influence of individual rootstock genotypes on flower bud distribution and density, flowering was characterized using Hedelfinger sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) grafted onto 15 rootstocks and Montmorency sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) grafted onto 12 rootstocks.
Both rootstock and position within the second-year-wood affected flower number per spur and spur density.
On the less vigorous rootstocks of sweet cherry, spurs predominated in the medial and distal sections.
In all sweet cherry rootstock treatments, number of flowers per spur increased from proximal to distal positions; on Gisela rootstocks, the number of flowers per spur was consistently higher than in the other treatments.
In sour cherry, number of flowers per spur was highest in the proximal and medial sections.
