Abstract
Fruit growth and development is controlled by many endogenous and exogenous factors.
Among the endogenous factors plant hormones and carbon fixation and allocation may be the most important ones.
However, both are strongly affected by exogenous factors and hormones often transform exogenous signals into endogenous regulatory systems.
In this review, an attempt is made to focus on the particular role of hormones, but also of assimilates, at particular developmental stages of the fruit.
Further areas of research, which might be rewarding for the further elucidation of mechanisms regulating fruit development, are suggested.
