Abstract
As photosynthesis is the basis of all plant production, the rate of net photosynthesis has been considered a measurable expression of the influence of environmental factors on plant production.
The method has the advantage that many experiments can be conducted in a short period of time using the same plants.
Being a non-destructive method, the plants can be followed from the very beginning as seedlings or cuttings to the final stage of development.
Furthermore, the diurnal variation in net CO2 uptake can be examined closely which has added new information to our knowledge about plant behaviour.
