INFLUENCE OF SUBCLONES OF M.9 AND P.22 AND NEW POLISH-BRED ROOTSTOCKS ON GROWTH AND YIELDS OF ‘JONAGOLD’ AND ‘LIGOL’ APPLE TREES

Abstract
The influence of subclones of M.9 and P 22 and new Polish rootstocks P 59, P 60, P 61 and P 62 on growth and fruiting was studied in a field experiment during 7 years.
Rootstocks were grafted with Jonagold and Ligol cultivars.
Tree vigour on M.9 subclones was very close to that on standard M.9 EMLA. Trees grafted on the Polish rootstock P 62 were much weaker than those on M.9 EMLA. Tree vigour on subclones of P 22 rootstock were similar to that on the standard P 22, except for subclone P 22/K. The Jonagold cultivar grafted on P 22/K was weaker than on standard P 22, whereas Ligol was more vigorous on the standard P 22. The smallest trees were obtained on P 59 and P 61 rootstocks.
Among the semi dwarfing rootstocks the smallest trees were on P 60. Yields were more or less proportional to tree size.
Yielding efficiency among the M.9 clones was highest on M.9 Pajam 1 and also on the Polish subclones of P 22, P 22/K, P 61 and P 59. Yielding efficiency of the semi dwarfing rootstocks P 14 and P 60 was similar to the efficiency obtained on M.26 rootstocks.
