Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate in Western European tree-nurseries used plum and pear rootstocks in Latvian conditions.
The study included the vegetative growth and yield production of the European plum cultivar Victoria and the diploid plum cultivar Kometa Kubanskaya on 8 generative and 8 vegetative propagated rootstocks.
The results of the study show that the seedlings rootstocks of Western Europe, such as St.
Julien Noir, Wangenheims Cwetche and St.
Julien Wandenwill are suitable for tree propagation in Latvia.
Vegetative propagated rootstocks St.
Julien A, G 5/22 and Pixy are more expensive, but could be promising, if the evaluation results in the orchard are positive.
In the trial, 3 quince and 4 Pyrus communis rootstocks were also included.
Good results were obtained in the study and an interstock was used to prevent incompatibility of the quince rootstock with the pear cultivar.
From the Pyrus communis rootstocks, Pyrodwarf showed the best results.
The quince rootstock QC showed insufficient winter-hardiness in Latvian climatic conditions.
