Abstract
Frutana® is a type of Prunus fruticosa Pall. found in the south-east of Poland.
This is probably a natural hybrid of P. fruticosa Pall. x Prunus cerasus L. The tree from Frutana® grows weakly, although stronger than other P. fruticosa Pall. types.
It is more winter hardy and healthy.
For this reason Frutana®, earlier named as P. fruticosa No. 8, was used experimentally as an interstem for sweet cherry trees.
In the research which has been carried out since 1972, P. fruticosa No. 8 (Frutana®) was observed to be a good interstem for ‘Van’ and ‘Bűttner’s Red’ cvs (Grzyb et al., 1985; Rozpara, 1994). In the experiment reported here, Frutana® used with three other sweet cherry cultivars also caused appreciable tree size reduction, increased crop, improved fruit quality and made the trees more winter hardy.
