HOT WATER TREATMENT TO ELIMINATE COLLETOTRICHUM ACUTATUM FROM STRAWBERRY RUNNER CUTTINGS

Runner cuttings were taken from three cultivars, ‘Elsanta’, ‘Florence’ and ‘Symphony’, and subjected to hot water treatments.
The cuttings were immersed in a pre warming tank at 35oC for 3 to 7 minutes, followed by a hot water tank at 50oC for 2 to 5 minutes.
The cuttings were then rooted into peat in modular cells under mist irrigation.
Leaf appearance was recorded every four days, and after 32 days fresh root weight was recorded.
Survival and vigour was reduced with increasing immer-sion time at 50oC and was also cultivar dependent.
Some treatments involving im-mersion at 50oC for either 2 or 3 minutes had good survival with acceptable vigour and root growth.
In separate experiments, runner cuttings were taken from mother plants that had been deliberately infected with Colletotrichum acutatum. They were immersed for 7 minutes at 35oC, followed by 2 or 3 minutes at 50oC. Both treatments were successful in reducing the proportion of cuttings infected with C. acutatum from above 80% in the controls, to between 6% and 17%.
