INVESTIGATION OF BIOLOGICAL TRAITS OF FIFTEEN APPLE CULTIVARS

Abstract
Biological traits of 15 introduced apple (Malus domestica) cultivars: ‘Ausma’ (Latvia), ‘Caravel’ (Canada), ‘Charles Ross’ (United Kingdom), ‘Ciganochka’ (Ukraine), ‘Elegia’ (Ukraine), ‘Greensleeves’ (United Kingdom), ‘Honeycrisp’ (USA), ‘Katre’ (Estonia), ‘Katerina’ (Ukraine), ‘Ornament’ (Ukraine), ‘Perlina Kijeva’ (Ukraine), ‘Radogost’ (Ukraine), ‘Teremok’ (Ukraine) and ‘Velte’ (Latvia) with standard cultivar ‘Auksis’ (Lithuania) were investigated at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture in 2002-2006. Phenology, shoot injury after winter, tree growth, resistance to scab (Venturia inaequalis) and content of photosynthetic pigments in leaves were evaluated of apple trees grafted on rootstock M.26 at a spacing of 4 x 2 m.
Investigations showed that ‘Velte’ apple trees bloomed early and ‘Honeycrisp’ late.
The results of the shoot injury showed that ‘Auksis’ and ‘Honeycrisp’ are most winter hardy.
The weakest growth was in trees of ‘Honeycrisp’ and ‘Katre’. Immune to scab are ‘Ciganochka’ and ‘Perlina Kijeva’. More photosynthetic pigments cumulated in apple trees of ‘Honeycrisp’, ‘Katre’ and ‘Caravel’, less in ‘Auksis’ leaves.
