Abstract
Oxidative stress is thought to play a key role in the pathogenesis of liver injury.
Antioxidant micronutrients would be expected to protect against liver injury.
In this study, we examined the associations of serum antioxidant carotenoids and serum liver enzymes stratified by alcohol intake levels or glucose tolerance status.
Data used in the present study was derived from health examinations of residents of the town of Mikkabi, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, in April and May 2003. Participants were recruited for this study, and informed consent was obtained from 886 subjects (302 male and 584 female). The participants were divided into three groups according to their alcohol intake level or into two groups according to their glucose tolerance status.
The associations of serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (gamma-GTP) or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) with serum carotenoid concentrations were evaluated cross-sectionally stratified by alcohol intake levels or glucose tolerance status, respectively.
The serum γ-GTP concentrations were significantly high in accordance with the ethanol intake level.
In moderate and heavy drinkers (>=25 g/day), the multivariate-adjusted geometric means of serum gamma-GTP concentrations were significantly low in accordance with the tertiles of the serum lycopene, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin concentrations.
On the other hand, the serum ALT concentrations in the groups of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and diabetes was significantly higher than those in the normal group.
The multivariate-adjusted geometric mean of the serum ALT concentration in IFG and diabetes group was significantly low in accordance with the tertiles of the serum beta-cryptoxanthin concentrations.
Our results provided support for the hypothesis that antioxidant carotenoids may protect against oxidative stress induced by alcohol or hyperglycemia in the earlier pathogenesis of liver dysfunction.
