Abstract
Tomato is an important vegetable in China for both outdoor and protected production.
It is known that leaf mould (Cladosporium fulvum) is a serious disease on tomato especially under protected cultivation.
The problem caused by it has been controlled effectively through using resistant cultivars in tomato production in China.
However, the virulence of the pathogen is changeable.
Breeding for resistance to C. fulvum has begun in 1984 in Beijing, China, since that time, new races that can overcome the resistance of Cf-4 or Cf-9 genes appeared respectively in 1990 and 1999. 44 cultivars (28 native cultivars and 16 from abroad) reported to have resistance to leaf mould were tested with 3 different races such as races 1.2.3, 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.4.9. Most cultivars were resistant to races 1.2.3, 1.2.3.4, but were not resistant to race 1.2.3.4.9. Only a few of them were resistant to race 1.2.3.4.9. That was why race 1.2.3.4.9 appeared in 1999 and became more and more prevalent in tomato production.
