Abstract
Lycopene content varied among 43 different flesh colour watermelon materials, from 0.0000 mg/100 g FW in G8 to 5.7536 mg/100 g FW in G4. To estimate the general combining ability (GCA), special combining ability (SCA) and heritability of watermelon lycopene the Griffing diallel cross design method 2 was used.
Results indicate that the square errors of watermelon lycopene content in GCA and SCA were significantly different, the GCA was higher than the SCA and showed an additive effect for dominate genes.
Narrow heritability and broad heritability of watermelon lycopene content were all higher, and this character was able to be selected in the early generation.
