Abstract
This study was conducted in a plastic greenhouse at Huazhong Agricultural University in spring 2006. The melon cultivar ‘Yilishabai’ was used as scion, and the commercial hybrids of squash ‘Xiuli’, ‘Nanzhen No.3’, ‘Nanzhen No.4’, ‘Quannengtiejia’, ‘Degaotiezhu’, ‘Huangli’, ‘Baili’, ‘Liuli No.1’ and ‘Liuli No.2’ were used as rootstocks.
Ungrafted plants were used as controls.
Grafted plants flowered 2-5 days earlier than ungrafted ones.
Plant height, stem diameter and leaf number of plants grafted onto ‘Xiuli’,‘Nanzhen No.3’, ‘Nanzhen No.4’ and ‘Quannengtiejia’ in vegetative growth stage were significantly higher than those of ungrafted plants.
Fruit fresh weight, diameter of fruit equatorial and polar of plants grafted onto ‘Nanzhen No.4’ rootstock were significantly higher than those of the ungrafted control.
There were no significant differences in fruit shape (Dpolar/Dequatorial) between grafted and ungrafted plants, fruit mesocarp thickness of plants grafted onto ‘Xiuli’, ‘Nanzhen No.3’, ‘Nanzhen No.4’, ‘Degaotiezhu’. ‘Quannengtiejia’ rootstocks were significantly lower than those of the ungrafted control.
Fruit TSS content of plants grafted onto ‘Nanzhen No.4’ rootstock was significantly lower than that of the ungrafted control, fruit soluble sugar of plants grafted onto ‘Liuli No. 1’ rootstock was significantly higher than that of the ungrafted control, and titratable acidity content of plants grafted onto ‘Nanzhen No. 4’, ‘Degaotiezhu’ and ‘Xiuli’ rootstocks were significantly higher than that of the ungrafted control.
Sugar:acid ratio of plants grafted onto ‘Nanzhen No.3’, ‘Liuli No. 1 ’, ‘Baili’ and ‘Huangli’ rootstocks were significantly higher than that of the ungrafted control.
Squash cultivars ‘Xiuli’, ‘Nanzhen No.3’ and ‘Quannengtiejia’ were recommended as suitable rootstocks for the production of ‘Yilishabai’ melons.
