Abstract
The genetic structure of European Castanea sativa populations appears to be due to natural and artificial selection and local effects of isolation by distance.
In this paper we present genetic variation among 31 natural populations of chestnut.
Six microsatellite markers were used to screen 778 individuals from four European countries (Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey). Multivariate analysis showed the existence of three distinct genepools: a pool covering the Italian and Spanish areas, one located in the East of Turkey and the last one covering the Greek populations and western Turkey.
The Turkish populations showed a higher Fis, Fit as compared to the other European populations.
Moreover the AMOVA analysis reveals a higher variance among the Turkish populations.
Our results seem to confirm the previous hypothesis indicating the Turkish region as the centre of the origin of the European Chestnut.
