MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF ‘JUDIA’ (CASTANEA SATIVA MILL.) FROM SEVERAL TRÁS-OS-MONTES REGIONS BY NUCLEAR MICROSATELLITE MARKERS

Abstract
Trás-os-Montes is the main producing region of chestnut in Portugal where almost 85% of the produced fruits belong to the ‘Judia’ cultivar.
It is one of the most important cultivated variety, which is spread in two protected denominations of origin (PDO) called “Castanha da Terra Fria” and “Castanha da Padrela”. ‘Judia’ is also the most planted variety in the new orchards mainly due to its good calibre, (50-80 fruits/kg) and good fruits appearance, however some heterogeneity is observed between genotypes.
In order to evaluate the genetic diversity of ‘Judia’s variety, a selection of 25 samples was made in seven different places of the Trás-os-Montes region.
The samples were analysed using nine simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers.
High levels of polymorphism were revealed with different genotypes obtained for six loci.
