EFFECT OF VARYING NIGHT TEMPERATURE ON THE GROWTH AND YIELDS IN CUCUMBER
Translocation and respiration were greatly affected by night temperature.
The fairly good amounts of photosynthetic assimilates were translocated by two hours at 20°C, and four hours at 16°C respectively.
The plants exposed to 10°C night temperature resulted in considerable low rate of respiration, although the translocation was restricted approximately by half.
Many experimental data led to conclusion that night temperature should be controlled at 16°C for 4 hours from 17:00 to 21:00 in the envening followed by lower temperature at 10 to 12°C for remaining night.
The new temperature regime had an increase in cucumber yields by 12%, and a decrease in fuel oil cost by 15%, as compared with those of the conventional cultivation for day and night temperatures.
