Abstract
It is well known that in Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. tulipae, ethylene and jasmonates have a promoting effect on gum induction and its accumulation in tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.) bulbs.
The induction and production of gums are suggested to be regulated by a signal network of jasmonates and ethylene, especially by cross-signals between them.
Gums are complexes of different substances but the most important constituents are polysaccharides.
The composition of tulip gum poly¬saccharides has been determined and shown to consist of glucuronoarabinoxylan with an average molecular weight of c. 700 kDa.
It was found that incubation of F. oxysporum f. sp. tulipae spores in a water suspension of tulip gums stimulated spore germination and induced the appearance of red coloured hyphae.
The incubation of spores of the pathogen in water only or supplemented with sucrose or glucose did not cause the appearance of the red compound(s) in hyphae.
It appears that poly¬saccharides of tulip gums are the main factor responsible for elicitation of red compounds in hyphae of the pathogen.
