Abstract
Spirotetramat (Movento®) is an IPM-compliant, high performance insecticide acting via a two-way systemicity and showing excellent and long lasting activity against the main harmful sucking insect pests in pome fruit.
Field trials in 2008-2009-2010 on apple (Malus domestica) demonstrate that a well-timed spirotetramat application at the first migration of woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum, when unprotected crawlers migrate from old to new shoots over the transition zone, benefits fully from the systemicity via the growth flux of the extension shoots, and results in high efficacy and a persisting activity, lasting at least six weeks.
This application of spirotetramat on woolly apple aphid coincides with the migration of scales, Lepidosaphes ulmi, to new extension shoots and fruitlets, and it also acts subsequently at shoot tip level where Dasineura mali midges and the aphids, Aphis pomi or Aphis spiraecola, colonize.
All these pests are additionally controlled.
The present experience shows that the precise positioning of spirotetramat controls several pests at once, and can drastically reduce the number of corrective insecticidal sprays required in an orchard.
In this way, the overall residue loading on the crop is reduced.
