Abstract
Nematodes are a serious problem for carrot cultivation in almost all regions of the world, with losses up to 100%. This study aimed to evaluate carrot popula¬tions from the Embrapa Vegetables breeding program for resistance to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and Meloidogyne javanica). Two carrot populations were evaluated: ‘0812518’ and ‘0812519’, with 38 and 31 families, respectively. ‘Brasília’, Kuronan’, ‘Alvorada’, and ‘Esplanada’ cultivars were in¬cluded as references.
The screening for resistance to root-knot nematode was based on percentage of root infection, yield, and reproduction factor (final population in the soil during the harvest/initial population in the soil before sowing). No significant differences for percentage of infection and reproduction factor were found.
However, the families ‘18’, ‘35’, ‘30’, ‘14’, ‘24’, ‘10’, ‘08’, ‘31’, ‘12’, and ‘13’ from the popula¬tion ‘0812518’, and ‘07’, ‘22’, ‘28’, ‘06’, ‘15’, ‘14’, ‘03’, ‘09’, ‘31’, ‘13’, and ‘18’ from the population ‘08125189’ showed, numerically, the lowest percentages of infection.
The similarity between the reference cultivars and the evaluated families, as well as their lower level of resistance when compared to ‘Brasília’, which originated these families, indicate the necessity for improving the methodology at the field level.
