THE LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY AND PRACTICE IN GHANA

Ghana has seen major development in the construction industry in the past 10 to 20 years.
This trend, combined with a desire for well-designed and landscaped environments, has created opportunities for professionals in the landscape industry.
This review discusses the inability of the existing landscape industry to organize itself to take advantage of these opportunities.
The current landscape industry has a low public image and is struggling for recognition from other professionals within the construction environment, which collectively is affecting professional standards.
The industry can develop through the promotion of formal education in its respective disciplines; assist in the development of curricula that provides access to students for training and intern positions within construction companies, as well as relevant government sectors.
Professional bodies associated with the industry should draft licensing bills for approval by parliament and assist with enforcement.
In addition, standards should be developed to guide the development of the industry.
These measures will regulate activities of practitioners and ensure high standards.
This paper also draws attention to the multi-faceted nature of challenges facing urban development in Ghana and the need to involve and engage the dedicated professionals with the necessary education.
