Abstract
This study aims at assessing the physiological activity of castor aralia (Kalopanax septemlobus) leaves and their potential as a medicinal ingredient in functional food and medicine.
The concentration of total phenolic compound in hot water and in 70% EtOH of castor aralia leaf extracts was 104 and 125 mg/L, respectively.
In the result of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging radical activity, 70% EtOH leaf extracts was shown to be 93.1% similar to butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) effect at a concentration of 1000 ppm.
Xanthine oxidase inhibition in hot water extracts and in 70% EtOH extracts of castor aralia leaves was 46.6 and 60.4% at 1000 ppm, respectively.
With these results, castor aralia leaf shows a great potential as a medicinal ingredient with a natural anti-oxidant effect.
