Abstract
The Korean raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis var. koreana) has been reported to improve the liver function and to provide cosmeceutical active compounds.
A biological activity and safety test was conducted to evaluate the biological activities of the fruit peduncle and root extracts of the Korean raisin tree as potential medicinal materials.
The cosmeceutical activities of different extracts were examined via 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical generation and ABTS+ cation decolorization, and their SOD-like activity, collagenase activity, and elastase activity were compared with the properties of the artificial anti-oxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and L-ascorbic acid (AA).
The anti-oxidant activities of the fruit peduncle water extract (HDFW), fruit peduncle ethanol extract (HDFE), root water extract (HDRW), and root ethanol extract (HDRE) of the Korean raisin tree were 83.6, 39.6, 85.9, and 74.5% in the DPPH assay, and 99.5, 13.7, 96.4, and 88.6% in the ABTS assay.
The collagenase and elastase inhibition effect of the Korean raisin tree was observed at the same concentration, though the collagenase inhibition activity was more significant at higher concentrations.
The anti-oxidation and anti-wrinkle effects of the Korean raisin tree have functional cosmetics use.
