Abstract
Phytoextracts and phytochemicals (or their metabolites) are often tested for pharmaceutical activities that gauge their capacity to modulate in vitro biochemical reactions, functional and structural parameters of human cells, or physiological function in experimental animal models.
One of our research objectives has been to develop screening assays to detect chemical modulators of human cell function.
We have developed such assays and are planning others with the goals of identifying (i) antioxidant and other neuroprotective activities in the context of misfolded/ aggregated proteins involved in amyloidogenic diseases, (ii) modulators of membrane structure/function parameters with consequences for physiological and pathological processes, e.g. endocytic transport, and (iii) epigenetic regulators.
In this report, we present novel evidence in the context of i for the phytochemical apocynin, a methoxy substituted catechol, originally isolated from a Himalayan alpine plant, Picrorhiza kurroa (Scrophulariaceae).
