Abstract
Argentina type globe artichoke variety is the most important in Chile.
This variety presents a wide variation among plants, according to its production per plant and the shape of the plants head, among other evidence of heterogeneity.
The aim of this study was to analyze population variability of Argentina type globe artichoke collected from the Coquimbo Region, and ascertain if the observed variation among plants is genetic or a consequence of a plasticity phenomena. 250 plants were collected and characterized by using UPOV descriptors.
A subset of 101 plants, selected at random, plus 6 out groups were characterized by applying
5 microsatellites markers (SSR). Globe artichoke plants collected from the Coquimbo Region showed a wide variability for all the morphological characters and, in most of them, the environmental variance exceeded the magnitude of the genetic variance.
The 101 accessions of the Argentina globe artichoke type studied with microsatellite loci showed the same genotype, suggesting that they correspond to clones of the same original variety, even if more markers should be used to confirm this result.
Phenotypic differences found in the accessions of this variety could correspond to somatic mutations that require more sensitive and specific techniques for detection.
