Abstract
The Directive 2006/124/EU has introduced in EU Member States the listing cultivars for marketing of seed and propagating material of globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L. = Cynara cardunculus L. subsp. scolymus (L.) Fiori). The Italian Catalogue of globe artichoke has been established in 2007 and to date 15 cultivars of artichoke are registered on it, while 37 on the EU Common Catalogue.
The identity of new cultivars is established by examining the distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS test) for both listing and granting of Plant Breeders Rights.
The DUS trials are the technical base for the registration of new cultivars on the official Italian Catalogue (and then the EU Catalogue) and the legal protection given at national and European level.
The technical guides of UPOV (International Union for the Protection of new Varieties of Plants) and technical protocol of CPVO (Plant Community Variety Office) provide the characteristics to be examined for globe artichoke, the cultivars to be considered as reference and the methods of examination.
States of expression are given for each characteristic to define and to harmonize descriptions.
Each state of expression is allocated a corresponding numerical note for ease of recording of data and for the production and exchange of the description.
Distinctness, according to UPOV principles, have to be clear and consistent.
Different standards are applied for the assessment of uniformity for seed propagated cultivars and vegetatively propagated cultivars.
Recently UPOV is developing a unique technical guide for Cynara cardunculus L. combining the characteristics of cardoon and globe artichoke.
