Abstract
It is known that ethrel or ethylene can stimulate flowering of bulbous irises; these substances reduce the occurrence of driebladers, i.e., non-flowering plants, and the incidence of blasting, i.e. cessation of the development of flower buds.
The role of ethrel was further analysed, and it was found that this compound causes morphogenetic and physiological changes.
Ethrel induces the growing point of the main axis in the bulb to switch from a vegetative to a reproductive state, and reduces bud blasting because it provokes the plant to form a smaller number of leaves; such plants are less susceptible to bud blast.
In addition, ethrel leads to a lower susceptibility to bud blasting in plants with a certain number of leaves.
