Abstract
Because of its potential as a commercial plant, a breeding program was started on Lachenalia.
In this paper the results of 39 interspecific combinations between L. aloides, L. bulbifera, L. contaminata, L. mutabilis, L. orchioides, L. roodiae, L. rubida and L. unicolor are presented.
Of these combinations 10 were not successful, 9 set seed but the seeds did not germinate, in 2 cases the hybrid seedlings died after germination and in 18 combinations progeny was obtained and has flowered.
Isolation barriers are discussed and it is found that flower size, poliploidy, reciprocal combinations and genetical differences within a species must be considered with Lachenalia breeding.
