Abstract
Yellow disease, which is caused by Xanthomonas hyacinthi (Wakker) Dowson, cannot be sufficiently controlled in the field.
The most important control measure is heat treatment of the bulbs during storage, which can kill the bacteria but sometimes damages the bulbs.
Because the incidence of heat damage has increased in recent years, the growers tend to apply this treatment incompletely or omit it.
The chance that yellow disease will spread is therefore increasing.
Research has concentrated on factors that can cause the many forms of heat damage, the symptoms of which are described here.
