Abstract
Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide that stimulates the growth of various plants, including orchids.
The effects of 20-20-20 foliar application at the regular or half the regular application dosage supplemented with 0, 20, 40, or 80 mg L‑1 chitosan on the quality of cut Mokara were investigated.
Neither the regular dosage nor half the regular application fertiliser dosage supplemented with all the chitosan concentrations had any effect on the inflorescence length or percentage of plants with inflorescences.
However, the 40 mg L‑1 chitosan concentration combined with the regular dosage or half the regular application fertiliser dosage improved plant inflorescence display life.
The cut inflorescence from plants treated with the regular fertiliser application dosage had a significantly longer display life (15.14 days) than those from plants treated with half the fertiliser dosage (13.27 days). The display life of the inflorescences from plants treated with half the regular fertiliser dosage in combination with chitosan at 40 or 80 mg L‑1 was extended to 15.00 and 16.60 days, respectively.
Therefore, decreasing the fertiliser application dosage rate reduces the production cost when applied at half the regular fertiliser dosage supplemented with appropriate chitosan concentrations.
