Abstract
We simulated the sea shipment of Vanda orchids (~2 years old). The orchids were packed without media in corrugated cartons, and stored at 15°C for 15 or 30 days.
We found that packing the Vanda orchids horizontally or vertically had no significant effect on their freshness, leaf colour score, or root colour score.
Vertically packed orchids had more root damage than horizontally packed specimens.
Orchids packed in cartons with no holes lost less weight than those packed in cartons with holes.
The concentration of ethylene in the cartons with holes was the same as that in the cartons without holes.
We simulated the transportation of Vanda orchids packed horizontally in cartons without holes at 15 and 18°C. The ethylene and carbon dioxide concentrations in the cartons kept at 15°C were the same as those kept at 18°C. The orchids stored at 15°C were still fresh at the end of the experiment.
All the orchids investigated subsequently grow normally in a greenhouse.
