Abstract
The production and access to healthy food is threatened every day by the negative effects of human activity.
In particular, the Mediterranean region is one of the areas expected to be most affected by climate change.
Climate change causes and exacerbates environmental stresses such as drought and salinity.
This effect inevitably threatens the continuity of production and consumption of vegetable crops.
Therefore, it is necessary to select or develop stress-adapted genotypes to continue production.
This can be achieved by exploring and exploiting the genetic variability in local genotypes.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of a total of 20 tomato accessions selected from different Mediterranean regions and cultivar Moneymaker in the framework of the PRIMA project VEG-ADAPT entitled Adaptation of Mediterranean Vegetable Crops to Climate Change-Induced Multiple Stress. Tomato accessions were grown in open field conditions and morphological characterization was performed according to the International Plant Genetic Resources (IPGRI) descriptor.
The seed characterization was done before sowing, the seedling characterization was done when the true leaves are fully opened and the growth tip is about 5 mm, the shoot characterization was done when the plant reached to the 2nd-3rd cluster harvest, the flower characterization was again at the 2nd-3rd cluster flower establishment and the fruit characterization was done at the 2nd-3rd cluster fully ripe fruits.
Looking at the results, it was seen that the genotypes showed high variation.
