Abstract
Autochthonous grapevine cultivars are of multiple importance within the Italian ampelographic platform, also thanks to the ability to make useful agronomic characteristics available, as well as to evoke historical and cultural values of a specific territory.
In Lazio Region, especially in the last 20 years, the cultivation of vines has seen a 43% decrease in planting area which has been associated with a reduction in the ampelographic base.
This process has stimulated an interesting work of rediscovery of the autochthonous cultivars for the region.
In this context, at the Centre of Viticulture and Enology (CREA-VE) in Velletri a collection of autochthonous cultivars is maintained.
These cultivars were recovered in different wine-growing areas in Lazio Region: for cultivars ‘Malvasia del Lazio’, ‘Bombino’ and ‘Trebbiano’ reference wine-growing area is the province of Rome, ‘Cesanese di Affile’, ‘Lecinaro’, ‘Pampanaro’, ‘Capolongo’ and ‘Maturano’ are growing principally in the province of Frosinone; ‘Moscato di Terracina’, ‘Abbuoto’, ‘San Giuseppe’ are growing in the province of Latina, while ‘Aleatico’ and ‘Greco’ in the wine-growing area in the province of Viterbo.
To characterize the autochthonous germplasm of these different area, the plant material of 43 cultivars, for a total of 84 accessions were subjected to ampelographic description by using 41 International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) descriptors.
Statistical analysis was conducted applying a principal component method dedicated to exploring data with both continuous and categorical variables and to identify the most useful variables for discrimination among genotypes and putatively useful in the next breeding programs and/or to reduce time in morpho-phenological characterization, a very time-consuming activity.
This study suggests that a combination of statistical approaches allows for the characterization of accessions and, at the same time, shows that some traits chosen for the analysis lead to the same results obtained for other characteristics.
Therefore, cultivar description can be notably reduced by the correct choice of the set of traits to be observed.
